Viking Tennis State Tournament Results
It was a successful trip as the Vikings brought home two Singles Runners-Up and a Team 4th Place!
A huge congratulations go out to the amazing Village High School Tennis Team for setting a school record by qualifying all twelve players to this year's TAPPS State Tennis Tournament! Junior Innes Maccauley paved the way for the boys by finishing third overall, while senior Anahita Gozalpour's second place led the Lady Vikings to a fourth-place finish in the Final State Team Rankings!
Gozalpour continued her dominance by advancing to the State Singles Final, dispatching her credible opponents in quick fashion while losing just seven games throughout her first three match victories. In the state final though Anahita ran into the only player to defeat her over her high school career, and unfortunately dropped a tough finals match in straight sets. Gozalpour finishes her career earning a school record 53 singles match wins.
Elsewhere for the Lady Vikings, Senior Meghna Prabhakaran partnered with sophomore Lauren Maughon dropping a tough opening doubles match to the eventual state champions from Dallas Ursuline Academy. Meghna finishes her Village career with the most doubles wins in school history at 29 matches. Senior Kemi Dada partnered with freshman Elyana Okuweze to drop a tight three-set match that could have gone either way, while sophomore Sidra Ganni qualified in girl's singles! On the boy's side, junior Innes Maccauley brought his competitive fire to each and every match, eventually falling to only the state champion! Innes defeated El Paso Cathedral players in straight sets during the first two rounds to earn a spot in the semi-finals where he was matched up with a Senior from Dallas Parish Episcopal. This was one of Maccauley's finest moments on the tennis court this year, though he fell 7-6 (6), 6-4. Maccauley had an amazing season, and now has opportunities to play college tennis if he desires. The boys also saw senior Andrew Maughon (subbing for senior Thomas Lascaud (sickness)) partnered with Junior Joshua Grynstein in boys doubles where they drew a tough match which they dropped to the eventual state champions. Sophomore Alex You partnered with freshman Sungmo Kang and also dropped a tough first match against eventual state semifinalists, and freshman Lingchuan Wang fell to the state runner-up in a tough first-round match. It's been an incredible season and, though there is a strong group of players returning next year, and many eighth graders graduating into The Village High School, our seniors will be missed greatly. Nevertheless, the future is very bright for the Village Vikings Tennis Program!
