The Village School Boys Soccer wins TAPPS 6A State Championship
For the first time in school's history, Boys Soccer wins TAPPS 6A State Championship. The Village reached the final four after defeating five-time state champions San Antonio's Central Catholic 3-1 and then defeated Antonian 3-2 in the semi-final to reach the final. The State final was no different for the red-hot Vikings as they defeated Forth Worth Nolan Catholic 2-0 to snatch the state title.
"Honestly, from Day 1, I was confident that we had the talent to go all the way," said The Village School head coach Ansari in an interview with Houston Chronicle. "It was just a matter of focusing on culture and tactical aspects of the game. We improved throughout the season. We went through ups and downs, and the culture is what rescued us. We focused on character, commitment, and teamwork. We worked all year long on improving, and it paid off." Eliot Gregoire scored in the first half for the Vikings before Charlie Johnston doubled the score with a magnificent corner kick in the second half. "We understood that a state title was on the line," Ansari said. "There is no space for error or mistakes. Naturally, we started to defend better and focused on keeping the two-goal lead and securing the state championship. Our focus changed after the second goal. We basically wanted to control the game, control the tempo, and (Nolan Catholic) got shorthanded with a red card, so that made it easier for us to manage the game and move forward."
