Village Boy’s Basketball Lays the Foundation with a Bright Future Ahead
The Village Boy's Basketball Team laid the foundation this season for a very bright future. Despite facing one of the most challenging schedules in program history and losing 6 players due to injuries this season including leading scorer Jaylen Williams the Village Boys Basketball team made the state basketball tournament and laid a the foundation for a very bright future.
The Vikings season ended with a loss to El Paso Cathedral in the State Basketball playoffs on Saturday in Abilene. Despite the loss, the Vikings were able to accomplish a lot this year. On the court, the Vikings created a basketball identity of defend, rebound, and run. Off the court, the Vikings were able to create a program culture based on the programs 4 core values of Relationships, Controlling the Controllables, Servant leadership, and Trusting the process.
The Vikings played an extremely challenging non-district schedule including playing 19 of their 25 opponents that made the state tournament and 17 out of the 34 games the Vikings played were against teams that appeared in the TABC rankings, homeschool rankings, or max preps rankings. The Vikings plan to continue to pay this type of challenging schedule in the future.
"We want our basketball team playing against the best teams in the city of Houston and the state of Texas. This type of competition makes us better, challenges our players, and prepares us for league district play," says Coach Johnson.
In addition to establishing a culture and identity this season, playing against one of the toughest schedules in Houston, and making the state playoffs, the Vikings will return 76% of their district scoring. The Vikings will return 7 players that received varsity experience this year including 4 players that started games. The Vikings will return 3 of their top 4 leading scorers including Trace Boling who averaged 18 ppg, 6 rebs, and 3 assists.
The team's 3 seniors helped laid the foundation for a very bright future. "Our 3 seniors helped laid the foundation this year for us to build on. Jaylen Williams showed our program how to work. Kshon Thomas showed our program how to be a great teammate and serve others. Timi ToluOgunkoy helped show our players you can have fun and work at the same time. These 3 seniors were so valuable in helping us establish a culture and make the playoffs. We are forever grateful to their contributions to our program. These three seniors helped lay the foundation, " said Coach Johnson.
