Varsity Boys Football Wins the TAPPS Division V Championship!
The article below was featured in the Houston Chronicle! Congratulations to all of our players and coaches for a tremendous effort and commitment this year, resulting in our first TAPPS Division V Championship! Go Vikings!
The TAPPS Division V football state championship is staying in the Houston area. The Village School sealed its first state title with a 38-28 victory against previously-unbeaten Austin St. Dominic Savio Catholic, completing a stellar 9-1 season. The Vikings led 14-7 at halftime and gradually pulled away from the Eagles as Brady Bassham connected twice with Jo'Qwon West in the second half and Juan Soler added a field goal. The Village School maintained a double-digit lead much of the half, with West adding the clincher on a 30-yard touchdown run. Savio finished 8-1.
It was the third state final appearance in four years for the Vikings, who lost to El Paso Cathedral in 2016 and 2017, the latter by only three points. They outscored opponents 437-197 this year, with the only loss 58-52 to TAPPS Division II playoff qualifier Fort Bend Christian.
The Vikings, coached by Kevon Bagot, recorded two victories against SPC schools during non-district play and were perfect during the zone schedule. They defeated Cristo Rey Jesuit 45-13 and Beaumont Kelly Catholic 40-27 before a 28-21 triumph against defending state champion St. John XXIII.
The Village School could return ample talent for a run at a repeat title. The Vikings graduate a small senior class, one that certainly made its mark, and includes Bassham, Garri Smith, Tyler Woods and Nicolas Denes. The Village School also set a program record for victories in a season, the previous high being seven.
